It is something we use every single day and often take for granted, but have you ever thought exactly how long is a toilet paper roll? In everyday life, we will look at the toilet roll at least every one or two days, and we are all aware that every roll has a high number of different individual sheets, but what would a toilet paper roll look like fully unrolled in a single piece? In this article, we will discuss the average length of toilet paper rolls and how it can differ between brands. We will also look at what the longest-ever recorded toilet roll was and what objects could be compared to it that you may not have considered.
What is the average length of toilet paper rolls?
When asking how long is a toilet paper roll you should first consider that each roll will be different depending on brand, style and ply. More often than not a cheaper toilet paper will be a smaller ply and will have more sheets wrapped around the cardboard tube. This is another thing that needs to be considered, how wide is the cardboard tube? The average length of toilet paper will differ, but we will go off the average for argument’s sake.

The average sheet of toilet paper is around four and a half inches long which is around 11cm. On average there are about 200 sheets per roll. Of course, both of these pieces of information can be different depending on the brand. Based on these numbers the average length of toilet paper roll will be around 900 inches long. This is the equivalent of around 23 meters, 75 feet or 2,286cm.
In comparison, this is about half a length of an Olympic-sized swimming pool or just shorter than the length of a Routemaster double-decker London bus. Whilst this may seem impressive it is important to remember that this is only the average, and some toilet paper rolls will have more sheets, bigger sheets or larger cardboard tubes.
What is the longest toilet roll ever made?
So how long is a toilet paper roll when the gloves are taken off? In 2011 the United States-based brand Charmin created the largest toilet roll ever made. Breaking the previous record by Kimberly-Clark, the company created a roll that measured 9 ft 8.9in (2.97m) tall with a 17-inch (0.43m) diameter cardboard tube in the centre. The roll contained over a million square feet of paper, the equivalent of 95,000 rolls of a regular roll.

This means that if the average roll has a length of 900 inches, the most giant toilet roll in the world would have a length of 85.5 million inches which would be around 7,125,000 million feet, 2,171,700 meters or 1,349 miles long. For context, if you were to travel 1,349 miles from Heathrow airport you would be able to reach Kyiv, Ukraine travelling via toilet paper. Or, even more impressively, you would be able to visit the International Space Station five times, that’s going there and back twice, and back again.
