The Dos and Dont’s of Cleaning Painted Walls

How to Clean Painted Walls

Cleaning painted walls keeps your house looking pristine, and removes any marks or stains that have accumulated. From hanging pictures to kids drawing on them, your walls go through a lot and we know how difficult it can be to keep them clean. Therefore, the Galleon Supplies team have put together this simple guide to show how to clean walls without removing paint.

The Dos and Dont’s of Cleaning Painted Walls

Do: Know Your Paint Finish

Before even thinking about cleaning supplies and techniques, it is critical to understand your paint finish. Different types of wall paints have different finishes which result in varying durability, appearance and texture. The paints also vary in their ability to be cleaned and washed.

Therefore, it is so important to know and understand your paint finish before beginning the cleaning process of your painted walls.

Here’s a simple breakdown of some common paint types and how easy they are to clean.

Paint type How easy is it to clean?
Glossy Easy
Semi-glossy Easy
Satin Medium
Matte Hard
Flat Hard

Do: Test Products Before Use

If you’re going to damage your walls, make sure it’s in that tiny spot covered up by your fridge. We highly recommend that you test your products on a small, hidden area in your home. This way, if the product is not right for your paint type, it’ll only be that hidden spot that is affected.

Do: Dry off Your Walls

When cleaning, if you leave excess moisture on the wall it can result in mould growth, paint blisters and discolouration.

There is a simple solution to this, either keep the windows and doors open whilst cleaning. Or, simply wipe the walls down with a soft, microfibre cloth. This particular cleaning supply has a range of benefits, including a soft cleaning effect.

Don’t: Scrub Your Walls Harshly

Scrubbing your walls too harshly is the number one cause of paint removal when cleaning painted walls.

When you scrub your painted walls too harshly, it can result in severe discolouration, paint chipping and other types of damage. If you’re living in a rented property, this can cause issues with getting your deposit back so it’s something to be mindful of.

Don’t: use Harsh Cleaning Tools

Whilst cleaning your walls, it can be easy to create scratches and swirls by using the wrong tools for the job. Therefore we would never recommend using scouring pads or steel wool to do this task.

Always use a microfibre cloth, or soft sponges to wipe your walls. You will avoid the sinking feeling of finding a scratch created by yourself.

Don’t: use Excessive Cleaner

In the case of cleaning painted walls, less is more. Using too much cleaning product makes it harder to rinse your walls and commonly leaves streaks.

Therefore, study the label and guidance before using a cleaning product to get the right amount to clean your painted walls.
