Your Office Kitchen Cleaning Checklist

Office kitchen cleaning is an element of office life that is often forgotten. Amongst the bustle of the workplace, organising and cleaning the kitchen is often the last priority. However, endeavouring to deep clean an office kitchen every once in a while is actually good for the overall stress levels of the staff. But why?

In this article, we discuss how to clean an office kitchen, the benefits of doing so, and how to get staff to keep a kitchen clean. We’ve also provided a handy printable PDF to put up in your kitchen!

Why is Office Kitchen Cleaning Important?

When people are busy and work gets messy, so do rooms. But it’s incredibly important to keep your space clear in the kitchen and around the office to help reduce stress levels in your staff.

Cluttered and messy environments can enhance feelings of stress and overwhelm that are common in the workplace. And even if you can’t control your workload, you can control your kitchen.

We guarantee that setting aside a little time to deep clean an office kitchen will make you and your colleagues feel lighter during work hours.

Not only this, but stains, smells, and hardened food particles that occur as a result of lacking office kitchen cleaning can make the eventual cleaning process more time-consuming. Which we’re sure is the last thing you need!

How to Get Staff to Keep the Kitchen Clean

It can be difficult to set aside time to clean a kitchen, especially in a busy working environment. So usual rotary systems probably won’t be an effective incentive for your staff.

You may find that responsibilities will be passed from one employee to another, as someone may not have the time. This can make the colleagues who regularly clean the kitchen feel put on and unrecognised.

So, the best way to get staff to keep the kitchen clean is to get everyone involved and implement a reward system. For example, you could use stamps, and tokens, or write the names of regular cleaners on paper to draw from a pot for a prize (maybe a free coffee!).

Although it may seem juvenile, this method is effective in incentivising employees into taking the time from their day to do less preferable tasks, as there is a promise of a worthwhile reward.

What do I Need for Office Kitchen Cleaning?

We recommend you keep your kitchen stocked with these essential items to ensure staff can simply reach for them as opposed to having to look for them:

  • Antibacterial Wipes/ Spray
  • Paper Towels
  • Sponges
  • Dishwashing Brushes
  • Dish Soap
  • Cloth
  • Washing-Up Gloves
  • Bin Bags
  • Mop/ Bucket
  • Hoover

It is important that surfaces are not cleaned with the same products used to clean dishes and utensils. Else you run the risk of mass sickness days!

How to Clean an Office Kitchen

The best way to go about office kitchen cleaning is to start from the top and work downwards. If you’re doing a deep clean, start with the tops of your cupboards, and take everything off the shelves to wipe them down and clear dust.

Cleaning both the inside and the outside of your cabinets is recommended. Once the surfaces are thoroughly sanitised, you can start on the dishes. Only washing them in hot water to kill bacteria and using a clean cloth to dry them.
