Cleaning Appliances in The Kitchen: A Comprehensive How-To

Cleaning appliances is all about knowing what to use and where. There’s no use using a scourer on a toaster! So when it comes to kitchen appliance cleaning, what’s the best way to do it?

In this article, we give our tips and tricks on how to clean appliances with cleaning solutions, equipment, and handy DIY methods you may not have thought of. Your kitchen will be sparkling in no time and your appliances will look brand new!

How to Clean a Toaster

Let’s start small. You may have noticed some grubby marks on the external plastic panels of your toaster, but we’re talking deeper than that. Depending on the amount of toast you eat, you may be nose-blind to the strange burning smell emanating from your toaster when you turn it on. What is that smell?

Burning Crumbs.

It’s easy to forget about the crumb tray, but doing so could lead to a nasty fire if you leave the crumbs to accumulate for too long. So, when cleaning this particular appliance, it’s important to not only look on the outside but the inside.

You can easily empty your crumb tray after every use to form a habit and keep on top of it. But when it comes to cleaning the inner grills of the toaster, do not submerge it in water. Although this may seem obvious, doing so is also seemingly the easiest way to clean it. As you don’t have to navigate around the tricky inner components.

To clean the inside of your toaster, scraping the crumbs away with a toothbrush and scrubbing it with a baking soda solution is the best way to do it.

You will notice that the use of a baking soda solution will come up often when cleaning appliances, as it really is the all-around solution to thorough cleaning!

Once you’re finished with the inside, the outside is as simple as using a no-streak cleaning solution to achieve a polished shine.

How to clean a toaster: Empty the crumb tray, scrape the remaining crumbs away with a toothbrush and baking soda solution, wipe the external panels with a no-streak cleaning solution.

Cleaning the Kettle: Step by Step

Regularly cleaning appliances that use water is essential to prevent limescale buildup. Although limescale isn’t toxic to consume, it can make the water from your kettle taste offputting. So to prevent limescale buildup and effectively clean your kettle, you should follow these steps!

Cleaning appliances is all about using the right equipment. But this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use a chemical solution for effective appliance cleaning. In fact, the best way to clean a kettle is actually with vinegar!

  1. Add equal parts distilled white vinegar and water to the kettle until halfway full.
  2. Bring to a boil (the boiling water kills bacteria).
  3. Let the vinegar sit in the kettle after boiling for 15 to 20 minutes to soak the dirt inside.
  4. Pour out the water and vinegar and rinse the kettle to wash away the remaining dirt.
How to clean a kettle: Half-fill the kettle with equal parts distilled white vinegar and water, boil the water, let the solution sit in the kettle for 15-20 minutes to soak, pour the water out and rinse the kettle.

How to Safely Clean an Oven

Cleaning appliances that get hot requires more vigilance, as the cleaning solutions you may accidentally leave in the oven can release fumes when they heat up. Depending on the solution you use, the consequences can range from toxic to simply making your food taste or smell of chemicals.

You should clean your oven every three months if you use it to make a single meal daily. But the more often you use your oven, the more frequently you should clean it. With this in mind, you can choose to use a specialised oven cleaner and follow the instructions on the bottle to ensure you’re cleaning safely, or you can use a DIY method.

To create an effective DIY cleaning solution for your oven, mix baking soda and water to make a paste. The amount of water you need is as much as is required to make a paste. Apply this paste liberally on the walls of the oven and leave it to sit for 20 minutes to break down the dirt.

You could also spray some vinegar over the paste for extra cleaning power.

Once the solution has been left to settle, use a non-abrasive sponge to gently scrub the walls and effectively clean your oven. After scrubbing, a damp microfibre cloth will remove the rest of the paste.

How to clean an oven: Mix baking soda and water to make a paste, lather the paste on the inner walls of the oven, leave the paste for 20 minutes to dissolve the dirt, then scrub, wipe the paste away with a damp cloth and leave to dry thoroughly

How to Thoroughly Clean Your Microwave

Kitchen appliance cleaning is about working with the appliance to get the best results. When cleaning your microwave, using its heat to your advantage will help you to effectively dislodge difficult-to-reach stains and eliminate bad smells.

To clean your microwave, start by pouring 500ml of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl. Then microwave the water for five minutes to boil it and create steam. This steam will help to soften hardened stains and make them easier to wipe away.

Remove the bowl from the microwave and wipe it with a wet, soapy sponge. For older spills, this will take longer. You can wash the removable dish in the sink to get into all the grooves and clean the base of the microwave interior.

Once you have wiped the microwave with your wet sponge, go back in with a dry towel and ensure the microwave is fully dry before using it again.

How to clean a microwave: Pour 500ml of water and 2 tablespoons of vinegar into a bowl, microwave for 5 minutes until boiling, remove the bowl and wipe with a wet soapy sponge to remove the dirt, wipe the paste away with a damp cloth and leave to dry thoroughly
