Deep Cleaning Checklist: Prepare for the New Year

Prepare for the new year now with our deep cleaning checklist. From creating a welcoming environment for your clients to maintaining a healthy workspace for your employees, deep cleaning is extremely important. As well as the obvious regular cleaning tasks, we recommend that you should deep clean your office at least twice a year. The week before Christmas is the perfect time to do this as people are winding down and there’s generally less people in the workplace. But if you’re reading this in the new year, there’s never a bad time to revive your space.

In addition to this, no one wants to come back to work after Christmas to an office or workplace that’s dusty, dirty, or poorly stocked. So get ahead of those January blues by preparing now. What’s more, soon your favourite hygiene product suppliers will be taking a well-earned Christmas break. Prepare now by stocking your cleaning cupboard and give yourself one less thing to worry about next year. Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered. Read on for our deep cleaning checklist and the top products to help you complete it.

Your Commercial Cleaning Checklist

Whether you’re a cleaner, janitor, or simply a business owner with a penchant for cleaning, a commercial cleaning checklist is an extremely helpful tool. Despite all your experience and best efforts, you may overlook important tasks without a structured checklist. Create a detailed list for each job and ensure all tasks are systematically ticked off. Struggling for time? To give you a helping hand, we’ve made one for you:

Why you should you deep clean your office

Let’s delve into why a deep cleaning checklist is important in the workplace. It addresses hidden dust, grime, allergens, and bacteria which can build up over a matter of months despite regular cleaning. Perhaps more importantly, deep cleaning your office or workplace is essential for maintaining a healthy, productive, welcoming, and professional environment. Ultimately, proper cleaning is crucial to:

  • Overall well-being of employees
  • Fostering a sense of pride
  • Contributing to the success of the business
  • Boosting productivity

Ensure your office is ready for the New Year by following our comprehensive deep cleaning checklist below. Keeping everyone healthy at this time of year is a task in itself. According to a recent study, dirty desks are one of the biggest causes of sick days. This is because germs multiply on the hard work surfaces and remain infectious for 24 hours. If you want to learn more about how to tackle seasonal illnesses, read about our winter hygiene tips here. Otherwise, let’s dive into our checklist:

Deep Clean Toilets and Washrooms

It is vital to clean office toilets at least once a day. Office deep cleaning should pay extra attention to washroom cleanliness and address any problem areas. Deep clean the places you normally do like toilets, cubicles, sinks, and floors. Make sure you leave the floors until last to ensure all the dirt and grime is picked up. But also focus on other less obvious fixtures and surface areas like soap dispensers, door knobs, and window handles.

For bathrooms, disposable disinfecting wipes significantly reduce bacteria without the risk of spreading germs from one spot to another. Finally, restock essential hygiene supplies, such as toilet roll, antibacterial hand soap, and paper hand towels.

Kitchen and Break Room Refresh

When it comes to the kitchen and break room areas, the end of the year is the ideal time for a refresh. Empty out the refrigerator and responsibly dispose of any out of date or unused items. Wipe down the shelves and surfaces with antibacterial wipes. Do the same with the microwave and when organising your cabinets. It may be a good idea to check if all the mugs are currently in use and, if not, donate them to a local charity shop. Make room now for all the new mugs that people will receive for Christmas!

Disinfect High Touch Points

The wind-down to Christmas is the best time to encourage employees to declutter and organise their workspaces. Disposing of unnecessary paperwork and clutter on desks makes your next job much easier. Disinfect any ‘high touch points’ – areas in your workplace that are handled frequently – like desks, work surfaces, phones, keyboards, and other shared office equipment. Clean computer monitors, keyboards, and mice using sanitising spray and a microfibre cloth. Microfibre cloths are perfect for this type of task as they effectively trap both dust and germs. This makes them the perfect tool in your arsenal when completing your deep cleaning checklist.

Rubbish Disposal and Bin Cleaning

As Christmas and New Year holidays may disrupt the normal Refuse and Recycling collection dates, plan ahead by checking your local council for your rubbish collection day. Let everyone know or put up a sign to ensure that your colleagues or employees are informed.

Emptying bins regularly minimises germs and rubbish build up. On the last day in the office, change all the bin bags and clean bins with anti-virus spray so germs and bad smells don’t ruin your first day back in the new year. Use disposable cloth like blue roll when wiping surfaces like bins so you can dispose of it immediately.

Carpet and Floor Cleaning

Vacuuming carpets and mopping hard floors always becomes more challenging during the winter months. Wet weather and falling leaves are rife so a deep clean of these areas will wash away the months of trying in vain to keep on top of them. This is also a great chance to spot clean any stains you’ve noticed build up over the year. Alternately for a deeper clean, you could schedule a professional carpet clean to completely refresh your office.

Window, Mirror and Glass Cleaning

Clean windows, mirrors and glass surfaces is important to letting all that precious winter sunlight in. You can do this by removing fingerprints, smudges, and dirt using your old friend the microfibre cloth. They are like magnets for dirt, stubborn dust, and built up grime.

Dust and Wipe Down Furniture

Dust and wipe down furniture like bookshelves and storage units. These are the areas that may well be overlooked during the busy working week, but dust soon adds up! Create a polished and professional workspace by giving these a good wipe over. Hanging light fixtures and ceiling fans are some other key spots to tackle.

Entrance and Reception Areas

This space is often overlooked because people don’t tend to spend a lot of time here. However, this area is the first impression visitors and staff get of your workplace. Therefore it deserves a place on our deep cleaning checklist. Make a lasting impression by cleaning the entrance and reception areas to welcome guests with a neat and tidy atmosphere.
