What is Spring Cleaning?
Spring cleaning is the practice of blitzing your home during the spring months. Have you noticed that during the winter, homes tend to accumulate more dust, dirt, and clutter than usual? Springtime cleaning is an opportunity to refresh your home, traditionally associated with the arrival of spring (typically around March in the UK). This year, spring lasts from Wednesday 20th March until Thursday, 20th June 2024.

10 Spring Cleaning Tips
1. Get Organised
Before you get started, get organised! The first of our spring cleaning tips is to have a general tidy round each room beforehand. You’ll make the rest of your job so much easier. What’s more, this is also a great opportunity to clear out any unwanted clothes and household items. To give yourself an extra endorphin boost, be sure to donate them to your nearest charity shop.
2. Clean Windows
Over the winter months, windows can attract dust, grime, condensation and sometimes mould. Pull up your blinds, open your shutters or curtains, and clean your windows. Alongside a quality glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth, use a squeegee if you have one for streak-free results. It’s a good idea to wash the outside too (using a different cloth or sponge) to let all that light in for spring and summer!
Next, if you have blinds or shutters, be sure to dust them too. Alternately, for curtains, use your hoover to vacuum with the soft brush head attachment designed for furniture or upholstery. Work from top to bottom to easily remove all the dust, hair, and debris.
3. Wipe Walls
Start by using a vacuum or dry microfibre cloth to remove dust and cobwebs. Next, tackle stubborn surface grime like:
- Greasy fingerprints
- Mud or dirt
- Scuffs
- Dust
- Stains
Most of these issues can be simply removed by wiping them with a damp microfibre cloth. Clean from top to bottom, using something sturdy to stand on for those hard-to-reach spots. Once you’ve completed your springtime cleaning, this is also a good time to touch up any scratches or scuffs using a paint pen to completely refresh them.
In addition, clean tiled walls in bathrooms using a different microfibre cloth alongside a good antibacterial spray to rid them of germs, too.
4. Refresh Carpets and Rugs
According to a recent study, below the surface your carpet could be up to 4000 times dirtier than your toilet seat! With that said, once a year we recommend hiring a professional carpet cleaner or renting a rug cleaner to rid yourself of this build up dirt.
5. Don’t Forget Under Furniture
Let’s be honest, a lot of the time we’re cleaning around heavy furniture. Spring cleaning day should include lifting or moving furniture like sofas (with help, of course!). Roll up those rugs and hoover underneath them. Clean behind kitchen appliances wherever possible. You’ll be surprised how much dust accumulates where the eye can’t see!

6. Look Up
Another spot you won’t often think about but is worth a mention is light fixtures. The amount of dust that collects on top of ceiling lights is surprising. While you’re up there, add to this list the top of bookshelves and doors! They’re all hidden spots that don’t get attention in your weekly spruce of the house. Again, simply use a microfibre cloth to dust – just make sure you turn lights off and let them cool first! If you can’t reach these spots easily, use an extendable duster.
7. Deep-clean your Fridge
You may be used to wiping your fridge’s shelves to remove day-to-day spillages. But take the time during your cleaning for spring to remove the salad trays and shelves. Give them a proper wash in warm, soapy water. This will remove any bacteria and ensure your fridge is spotless.
8. Disinfect your Devices
You’re probably aware by now that your phone harbours a lot of germs. But do you actually clean it? If the answer is not, then turn it off (once you’ve finished reading our blog) and give it a wipe with a surface disinfectant wipe. Then allow it to air dry. This will kill 99.9% of bacteria and leave it sparkling. You might also think about wiping other electronics like:
- Television remote
- Computer keyboard and mouse
- Tablets
9. Skirting Boards
Well done for making it this far. Now it’s time for bonus points for wiping your skirting boards. This often overlooked spot often collects dust and really finishes off the spring cleaning checklist. Simply vacuum with a brush attachment to remove any dust before wiping with a damp microfibre cloth and all-purpose cleaner.
10. Keep Safe
It’s always best to protect your skin, even from household products, to ensure you avoid any skin reactions. Start by wearing clothes that cover your arms and legs that you don’t mind getting a bit dusty! Our top tip is always wear disposable gloves when cleaning. They protect your skin from chemicals and keep your hands clean when wiping grimy spots.
